1. Set your out-the-door number first
The advertised price is not what you pay. In California your out-the-door total includes sales tax at your home address rate, registration and title, a documentation fee capped by state law, and any accessories already on the car.
Decide the total you are willing to pay before you shop, and ask for quotes in those terms. It makes two dealerships genuinely comparable.
- Ask for an out-the-door quote in writing, itemized.
- Confirm whether dealer add-ons (paint sealant, nitrogen, tracking) are removable.
- Check your own credit union rate before you hear a dealer rate.
2. Pick the salesperson, not just the store
Dealership reviews average hundreds of employees together, so they tell you very little about the person who will actually handle your deal. Reviews tied to a named salesperson tell you far more.

5. Read the finance office paperwork slowly
The numbers you agreed on should appear unchanged. Warranties, gap coverage and prepaid maintenance are all optional and all negotiable. It is fine to say no and it is fine to take the contract home.
