12 questions to ask a car salesperson before you visit

5 min read · updated September 2026

A good salesperson would rather answer these by message than surprise you in person. The answers tell you whether the visit is worth your afternoon.

About the car

Confirm the exact vehicle exists and what is physically on it.

  • Is this specific VIN on the lot right now?
  • What accessories or dealer add-ons are already installed?
  • Can you send photos of any damage, wear or prior repair?
  • For used: do you have the service records and the vehicle history report?

About the price

Ask in out-the-door terms so nothing can be re-arranged later.

  • What is the out-the-door price, itemized?
  • Which add-ons can be removed from the price?
  • Are there manufacturer rebates I qualify for?
  • What rate are you quoting, and for what term?

About the process

This is where hours quietly disappear.

  • How long should I plan to be there?
  • Will you personally handle my paperwork?
  • What do you need me to bring for the trade-in appraisal?
  • If I decide against it, is my deposit refundable?

What a good answer sounds like

Specific, written, and unhurried. Vague answers about price, or pressure to "just come in and we'll work it out," usually mean the numbers change when you arrive.
